What is a black sauna?

Black sauna is a small structure where in general one or two rooms – changing room and sauna itself. Historically this structure did not have a chimney only low doors and small windows. There was a stone layer in the sauna under which a fire was burned. In this variation the fire warmed the stones; the smoke went out of the door and windows. To heat the black sauna one would need a whole day. The process was started with heating followed by ventilation and only in the evening you could start your sauna activities. The temperature in the sauna during the activities was not higher than 60C, but air was very moist. The heated stones retain the heat until morning.

As time goes by the number of saunas that are heated like in the past is declining. It is considered that the era of black saunas is nearing its end, but our aim is to realize all possibilities and offer this unique historical ritual – black sauna.
